Transitioning from PECS To SGDS (SPEECH GENERATING DEVICES)

This one day workshop is appropriate for teams supporting learners who may be ready to transition from PECS to SGDs. It is also appropriate for teams working with learners who are not currently using their devices effectively. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS®) is an evidence-based protocol that teaches vital communication skills such as initiation, persistence in relaying messages, picture discrimination and basic sentence structure. After mastery of these skills, the learner likely has a large repertoire of pictures in the communication book. If the learner is not speaking, the team may need to explore a transition to a dedicated Speech Generating Device (SGD) or tablet with communication app that will accommodate larger vocabularies and allow for continued language development. To ensure the rapid transfer of existing communication skills, the transition will require the team to assess current PECS skills and then analyze features of various apps/SGDS to select a device that will best meet the learner’s needs. Following device selection, detailed lesson plans are necessary to teach use of the new device as a functional communication system.

The Art of Supervision

Many working SLPs do not receive training during graduate school about supervision of graduate students, CFYs, or SLPAs, yet they are put in a position of supervision. This two hour session will discuss the supervisory process and strategies for success.

Outcomes:
1.Participants will demonstrate knowledge and skills of best practice regarding supervision.
2.Participants will create a flow-chart that helps guide them through the supervisory process.
3.Participants will discuss the challenges involved in supervision.

2. The video will be sent to you via email.
3. Once you have viewed the video, complete the survey within 2 two weeks.
4. When your survey has been completed, a verification of attendance document will be emailed to you. If you pay for the ASHA registry, NCSHLA will report your competition of the course to ASHA. Please note that it may take 6-8 weeks for your course to display on your ASHA transcript.
